Whitworth Street
Vibrant city centre public realm
The Whitworth Street project in Manchester presented a unique opportunity to blend contemporary design with the city's rich industrial heritage. The landscape concept aims to create a place of dwelling, socialising, and reflection. This is echoed in its sensitive design and use of locally influenced materials, which are vibrantly reflected through the scheme. The classic Manchester red brick is celebrated through careful and considering repurposing of the material.

Inspired by a rich industrial past
The public realm arches are a direct reference to the railway heritage of the site and the city. They evoke the grandeur and scale of the Victorian-era railway architecture, creating a visual connection to the past. The arches also serve a functional purpose, framing the street-level public realm spaces and providing structure for climbing plants.

From industrial revolution to green revolution
In a dense urban environment like Manchester city centre, providing space for nature and biodiversity is crucial. The public realm design, featuring diverse planting, trees, and seating areas, will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the development but also provide a place for residents and the public to relax and enjoy nature. The project showcases how we can retrofit city centre squares with green urban space that enhances biodiversity, reduces pollution, increases peoples dwell times, and reduces rain run-off. A climate resilient design that puts nature and people first.

Measuring Visual Impact
TVIA: Given the scale of the proposed tower, a thorough Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment (TVIA) was essential. The TVIA considered the tower's impact on the surrounding cityscape, including views from key vantage points. The design of the tower, with its profile and carefully chosen materials, was informed by the TVIA to minimize its visual impact and ensure it integrates harmoniously with the existing skyline.
The Whitworth Street project is an example of how contemporary architecture can coexist with and celebrate historical context. The design prioritises the creation of a high-quality public realm that is both functional, climate resilient and distinctive, while also respecting the heritage of the site and the city.
