A key harbour link for a community
The Maryport Boardwalk project presented a unique opportunity to enhance the connection between the town and its beautiful coastline. We approached this project with a focus on sensitive design, careful material selection, and a desire to create a seamless transition between the built environment and the natural beach. creating a much-needed connection for the town and its people.
Sensitive connections in a shifting landscape
Connecting the beachfront was a key objective. The boardwalk now provides a seamless, accessible link between the promenade and the harborside, previously separated by the sandy expanse known as La'al Harbour. This new connection invites exploration and creates opportunities for recreation, whether it's a leisurely stroll, a bike ride, or simply enjoying the views.
Sensitive design was at the forefront of our approach. We carefully considered the boardwalk's placement to minimise disruption to the existing dune system and avoid encroaching on the sandy beach. The structure's low profile and meandering form ensure it sits comfortably within the landscape, allowing uninterrupted views of the coastline. As vegetation establishes along the ever-shifting dune, the interplay between nature and the built form complement and counterbalance each other, making each visit to the dune an exciting and unique experience.
Resilience to the elements
Material selection was crucial in ensuring the boardwalk's longevity and visual appeal. We opted for durable, non-slip decking made from recycled glass and reinforced plastic, chosen for its resistance to the harsh coastal environment and its ability to withstand high tides and heavy foot traffic. The 'sand' colour of the decking, chosen through a public vote, complements the natural hues of the beach and creates a harmonious visual integration.
The Maryport Boardwalk is a testament to the power of thoughtful design to enhance the relationship between people and place. By carefully considering materials, prioritising sensitive design, and creating a seamless connection to the beachfront, we've created a space that invites the community to embrace and enjoy their beautiful coastline.
