Enterprise Wharf
Canalside public realm and workspace in Birmingham
Enterprise Wharf in Birmingham presented a fascinating challenge: to create a vibrant, contemporary workspace while celebrating the rich industrial heritage of the canal-side location. Layer.studio focused on weaving together these contrasting elements, creating a dynamic public realm that fosters community and celebrates the unique character of the site.

Putting the green into industrial
Recognising the importance of wellbeing in a modern workplace, we prioritised the creation of high-quality green spaces. These areas, including a central courtyard and a series of smaller pocket parks, are designed to provide opportunities for relaxation, informal meetings, and social interaction. We aimed to create a sense of tranquillity amidst the bustling city, offering a valuable amenity for building users and the wider community.

Reclaiming lost routes and making them accessible
The canal itself is a defining feature of the site, and we sought to maximize its potential as a public amenity. A key element of the landscape design is the creation of an enhanced canalside walking route. This pathway, accessible to all, will connect Enterprise Wharf to the wider canal network, encouraging walking and cycling. The route is designed to be both functional and visually appealing, with seating areas, lighting, and signage. We aimed to create a destination in itself, a place where people can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the canal and appreciate the industrial heritage of the area. The route also provides a vital green corridor through the city, supporting biodiversity and promoting sustainable transport.
