Maryport Boardwalk
A bespoke boardwalk links an important piece of coastline in Cumbria
Layer Studio is delighted to announce the completion of the Maryport Boardwalk, a key milestone in the town's transformation. Working alongside Buttress Architects since 2020, Layer Studio has played a central role in co-producing a series of strategic projects as part of the Future High Streets Fund, helping to breathe new life into this historic Cumbrian town.
The Maryport Boardwalk is a stunning new link between the town centre and the promenade, designed to provide both functionality and a sense of connection to Maryport’s unique coastal character. The boardwalk is just one of several exciting projects taking shape, including enhancements to Senhouse Street, a new skatepark on the promenade, and the Maryport Activity Centre.
Layer Studio led the detailed design and delivery of the boardwalk, ensuring it blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment. A standout feature of the project is the timber seating, sustainably sourced from windfall trees in the Lake District – a design decision that underscores the studio’s commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.
"We’re incredibly proud to see the Maryport Boardwalk come to life," said Matthew Warner, Director of Landscape at Layer Studio. "It’s more than just a functional link; it’s a space where people can enjoy the beauty of Maryport’s coast while connecting the town centre with the promenade. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and thoughtful design."
The boardwalk marks an important step in the regeneration of Maryport, creating a stronger connection between the town and its stunning waterfront, while celebrating its unique heritage.
